The 1901 census showed 690 watchmakers and 36 clockmakers in Dublin alone. Liverpool is well known as a major Watchmaking City and Dublin is not far away. The two Cities are not really that far away from each other; shortest distance between Liverpool and Dublin is 218 km = 135 miles. In earlier times the trip by Boat was a bit hazardous; the Irish Sea can be very rough. This Thomas Glover Verge Pocket Watch is a work in progress (Case Lid detached from Case and other problems) and has a Rare Irish Hallmarked Case. From: Wilsons Dublin Directory 1804 (part of Treble Almanac). Thomas Glover, Watchmaker 39 Upper Ormond Quay. Case 1806 by Francis Hull of Dublin. I have him listed with a succession of watchmakers in that town, Christopher d. 1764, Charles d. 1766 and a second Charles who was active up to at least 1783 as listed in Priestley. Priestley also has N F Hull as a watch maker and case maker at 20 Sackville Street. Looks like an interesting Dublin family to research.

I have Thomas Glover recorded at Kells (~ 80km NW of Dublin) in 1824 - might be the same family, there is also a Will Glover working in Limerick first quarter of C19th.

A pity about the damage to the dial from Liverpool with a Name on the back; its design is also unusual & most interesting. Regards Ray

That figure of 690 watchmakers in Ireland in 1901 is astounding!
