Hi I purchased this a number of years ago; a Robert Roskell Private Dial, for Ichabod Prall. It is in almost new condition; it looks like it has been in Air-conditioned comfort for a long time. I am more than pleased with it. I oiled and cleaned it and away it went with a strong slow tick. The movement has a “30 tooth Rack Lever Escapement”; I hunted on the internet to find details of this type of Escapement. The only difference on my movement is that it has a “Flat Polished Steel Balance Wheel”, instead of a Brass Balance Wheel shown in the illustration. RACK LEVER ESCAPEMENT. See Pl. 128. A form of lever escapement patented by Peter Litherland in 1791, patent No 1830, but an earlier escapement embodying the same principle was invented by the Abbe de Hautefeuille in 1722. The lever terminates in a rack which meshes with a pinion on the balance staff. The balance is never detached. It was made in large numbers in Lancashire in the early 19th century. There is also a “15 Tooth Rack Lever Escapement”. Lands belonging to Ichabod Prall, Esquire situated at Bloomingdale, in the Twelfth Ward of the City of New-York

I went into collecting Pocket Watches when I retired as a hedge against boredom. It has since become an obsession. But I love it; I often buy "Oddities and Orphan", Pocket Watches some times to my sorrow. This particular movement has strong connections to. Ichabod Prall who was part of a large Dutch family who settled in New York he was a "New York State Assembly", member in 1809 and later he began military service in 1815 as a Lieutenant Colonel, 106th Infantry, NY.
Ichabod Prall died on 14 September 1849. The Gold Case has at one stage been scrapped and I found an 1815 age related to put it in. This happens a lot to early Verge Fusee Pocket Watches. Regards Ray

Very Cool!

Rack levers were an early effort to keep watches from overbanking as they did not have safety rollers yet.

The downside is the watch requires enormous power to stay running due to all the points of contacts a rack has with the balance.

Another example of a less successful escapement.
