Hi, seeing as Keith mentioned that I have some very early Verge Pocket Watches I thought that I would Post one of them. There is some correspondence with a few people in this; the Ekaterina engraving is slightly different but may be the Engravers mistake. Well this one strained the Budget a little, errr (sic) have I ever had a budget? Or kept to it? I know very little about it, but I love it, I had a Russian Girlfriend years ago so it's her fault I purchased it. Hi Keith, it could be George III he did have a big Hooter, if it is it will be a match for my Queen Charlotte movement. The Hinge on the outer Case looks like it was meant to last forever. Please Russian translators and Monogram experts tell me what it all means. The bottom bit of the inscription looks like "Oct 24th 1794". I am going to have a go at translating the inscription. Regards Ray Hi, I may have cracked it by the Date and what looks like something to do with Catherine II.

The inner case, (box), is by Bartholomew Need & John Taylor, at 13 Bridgewater Square registered on 24 Feb 1783, but the marks in the outer case are too rubbed to read clearly. There are several Nelsons in Britten's, but the only one with dates roughly coinciding with this is Thomas, 1764-79, free of the Clockmakers 1779.

The design of the dial looks about right for the case hallmark and the rest of the movement, but how it acquired that Russian connection is intriguing to say the least.

Immediately after the peace with the Ottoman Empire was signed, Suvorov was again transferred to Poland, where he assumed the command of one of the corps and took part in the Battle of Maciejowice, in which he captured the Polish commander-in-chief Tadeusz Kościuszko. On November 4, 1794, Suvorov's forces stormed Warsaw and captured Praga, one of its boroughs.
The massacre of approximately 20,000 civilians in Praga, broke the spirits of the defenders and soon put an end to the Kościuszko Uprising. According to some sources the massacre was the deed of Cossacks who were semi-independent and were not directly subordinate to Suvorov. The Russian general was supposedly trying to stop the massacre and even went to the extent of ordering the destruction of the bridge to Warsaw over the Vistula River with the purpose of preventing the spread of violence to Warsaw from its suburb. Other historians dispute this but most sources make no reference to Suvorov either deliberately encouraging or attempting to prevent the massacre. Suvorov sent a report to his sovereign consisting of only three words: "Hurrah, Warsaw's ours!" Catherine replied in two words: "Hurrah, Field-Marshal!" that is, awarding him this title). The newly appointed field marshal remained in Poland until 1795, when he returned to Saint Petersburg. But his sovereign and friend Catherine died in 1796, and her son and successor Paul I dismissed the veteran in disgrace.
General Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov? From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia From a Person who lives in Saint-Petersburg It's Catherine II monogram on the case. This pocket watch is a reward for Military Merit from Her Majesty's Imperial Court. It's Russian tradition for many years .... Hi, I am pretty impressed with this bloke (I come from a Military Family) he may look a Dandy but look at his record. "Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov (Russian: Aleksandr Vasil'evich Suvorov; 24 November [O.S. 13 November] 1729 or 1730 - 18 May [O.S. 6 May] 1800), Count Suvorov of Rymnik Prince of Italy Count of the Holy Roman Empire, national hero of Russia, was the last Generalissimo of the Russian Empire. Nineteenth century sources sometimes refer to him as "Suwarrow" or "Suwarow".
Suvorov is one of the few generals in history who never lost a battle, being undefeated in over 60 large battles while frequently having numerical disadvantage. He was famed for his military manual The Science of Victory and noted for several of his sayings, including "What is difficult in training will become easy in a battle," "The bullet is a mad thing; only the bayonet knows what it is about," and "Perish yourself but rescue your comrade!" He taught his soldiers to attack instantly and decisively: "Attack with the cold steel! Push hard with the bayonet!". He joked with the men, calling common soldiers "brother," and shrewdly presented the results of detailed planning and careful strategy as the work of inspiration." From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If the engraving was done by somebody who did not read or speak Russian, but working from a manuscript document, perhaps here in the UK, small errors like this are not surprising, and indeed are not that uncommon even when the engraver was working with their native language!
